Analysis of performance video

Catfish and the Bottlemen – Twice

This is a performance video presenting the band performing the song with a black and white affect over the entire video. This black and white theme fits their album covers and also follows a more simplistic or minimalist look. this is affective, particularly to the audience who may be more interested in the music produced rather than the image that they are being presented as.

The Video uses continuity editing with no cuts as the band are performing to each other. The band are all facing each other as though they are rehearsing for the concert. This adds an authentic feel to the video as it portrays to the audience that they do not need any special editing or glossiness to be good at what they do.

Many of the shots have a main focus on the instruments all being used by the band members. This further demonstrates the value of the music to the artists in such a materialistic society. It is made clear that each member has a relationship with a particular instrument and focus is added to this when the music itself highlights this. This is particularly apparent in a drum solo.

The main singer in the band, Van McCann, or any of the band members never make any direct eye contact with camera as if the camera is not there. This is effective due to the fact that it gives the impression that the audience have interrupted a personal rehearsal of the band. The Indie Rock genre of the band is especially evident in this video as it strips back the complexity of the music industry to a simple band practice
